New Gadgets and Gizmos Released Today: Onkyo, MainGear eX-L 15, Motorola r7651S and More

August 11th 2009 | Posted by Drew

There have been a number of new gadget releases and a whole host of gizmos released that you might want to get your hands on recently. Some get more fanfare than others, and deservedly so. Some are underrated, and it seems that even more are overrated. For today let’s leave that distinction up to you and just look at a few new gadgets that are being shipped out this week.

ex-l-15Some Love for Laptops

Maingear eX-L 15

This week Maingear finally introduced their eX-L 15 which is being dubbed the mini version of the previous eX-L 18. It does not necessarily hold onto and utilize all the massive applications and features that the eX-L 18 does, but it is no slouch when it comes to laptops. It still comes with NVICIA GeForce GTX260m and a Core 2 Duo Processor. While it may not be as top of the line as the Maingear eX-L 18, it sure is a lot more affordable. At just $1,899 the 15 inch version will end up saving you over $1,000 when compared to the mammoth 18 inch eX-L. I know some people say size matters, but this is an instance when I will be more than happy to take the short end of the stick.

Newertech Intelligent Battery Charging Stations

Newertech has just released their new charging stations that can boost up 13 and 15 inch MacBooks. Not only do these charging stations contain two charging bays in order to charge two different MacBooks, but Newertech claims that the second bay is more than just a simple charger; it is a “conditioning unit.” The station is supposed to supply power and help maintain top health for the battery. Whether that actually works or not remains to be seen, but the power to charge up two batteries at once is pretty intriguing. At the moment the stations cost around $150 and can only be used with MacBooks that were purchased before June of this year.

3 New LCD’s from Dell

Dell seemed to fly under the radar this week even though they released 3 brand new LCD screens. This was a product release where there was very little fanfare and maybe Dell did that not on purpose, because there really isn’t that much to say. Overall these LCD screens are nothing spectacular by any means, but are very reasonably priced. The 23 inch monitor comes with a 5 millisecond response time, 1080p resolution and is priced for just $229. The 22 inch monitor comes with 1080p resolution and is priced at $199, while the 20 inch screen only boasts a resolution of 1600X900 and is priced at $139.

Enough with the “Cutesy Cell Phones”

With cell phones like the Palm Pre, and its sleek but all too cute design, taking over a lot of mobile companies have forgotten about the people that don’t just sit behind a desk all day or blog about fashion. That is why Motorola has created the Motorola r7651S. The “rugged” handset is made to last through extreme temperatures, vibrations, blowing rain, fog, dust, and pretty much everything else that you COULD encounter throughout the day.

The r7651S comes with built in Bluetooth, GPS, MMS, and has the ability to connect with twenty different people at the same time. The problem is that even though you may be worried about a few scratches on your iPhone, you need to pony up big time for this phone. The Motorola r7651S comes in at right around $2,000. If you can afford that then couldn’t you simply afford to buy a new phone every time you broke one? Seems easier to me.

home-theaterRelaxing at Home with Home Theater Gadgets

New Receiver from Onkyo

The new receiver from Onkyo is pretty cool, but is also missing a few features that would completely put it over the top. The TX-NR807 has all sorts of support for different connectivity options and comes with DLNA 1.5 streaming audio. The major knock against it is that it cannot handle video streaming and actually doesn’t even come with Wi-Fi. In this day and age there is absolutely no reason to come out with a receiver that is priced so high yet doesn’t even offer the Wi-Fi option. With that said the mass amount of streaming options for the Onkyo TX-NR807 and the codec support make it a decent purchase for people in the market for versatility.

High Speed Internet Connection for your Home Theater with Netgear

Netgear has released their Home Theater Internet Connection Kit which comes with an adaptor and a powerline to Ethernet switch. If your electrical wiring in your house can handle it the kit can help you get to transfer speeds as high as 200 mbps. To be fair wireless options are probably an easier choice but if you live in an apartment complex jammed with wireless signals or are working with a device that doesn’t have Wi-Fi, then this is your next best bet. At the moment the Home Theater Internet Connection Kit retails at just under $180.

Google Overpowers the Competition (Microsoft, Coca-Cola, and Others) in Brandz Top 100 Brand Name Value Rankings

August 6th 2009 | Posted by Drew
And Google Wins Again....Yawn

And Google Wins Again....Yawn

Millward Brown Optimor (Never heard of them? You aren’t alone) has come out with their annual ranking of the most well known, and financially prevalent, global brand names. The list itself is titled the Brandz Top 100. Let’s get into the statistics and findings first, then we will pick it apart.
The study has concluded that Google is indeed the most powerful and well known company name in the entire world. They were given a total brand worth of $100 billion while software conglomerate Microsoft came in at a distant second with a value of $76.2 billion. The list also concluded that Microsoft was only able to increase their value by an overall total of 8%, while Google accelerated with an increase of 16%. Coca-Cola came in third place in the “competition” with a supposed brand name value of $67.6 billion.

Now for My Questions…For What They’re Worth

This undoubtedly brings a couple of questions to mind. Firstly, how does Microsoft possibly fall $24 billion behind Google even though they make an incredibly larger amount of sales and money? I was at first startled by the findings but then quickly realized that this is indeed a BRAND name recognition study, not a total worth value. That does change the tone of my first question, but not by much. Microsoft has a market cap of $212 billion while Google only holds a cap of $142. Then again, Google tends to name and market everything based on the name, well, Google. Microsoft does tend to branch out a lot more with products that work well on their own such as Windows. I guess that is why Google is the apparently more recognized brand? Even still, Microsoft has been around a heck of a lot longer than Google, and you have to assume that figure would hold some value? Or maybe not.

There is Definite Value in BMW

There is Definite Value in BMW

Recognition of a Brand Name or Value of a Brand Name?  Make Up your Mind

Then other questions come along. How is Coca-Cola’s brand name value only half of Google’s? I will admit that maybe more people know about Google, but there cannot be that big of a difference, can there? I know the report breaks it all down and gives reasoning, but to be honest the explanations are pretty weak and excruciatingly vague. The only reasoning I could find for Google being DRASTICALLY higher then Coca-Cola would be the money made off of the brand name, not just name awareness. But then, how does that possibly explain that Toyota got a higher ranking, with $29.9 billion, than BMW, who was given a total of $23.94 billion. I would go out on a limb and say that a backpack with the BMW stamp would sell for a lot more than one with the words Toyota labeled on the front.
Maybe I am being too quick to judge. Maybe the scientific calculations are just behind the mental capacity of my mind. Or maybe this is just another weakly proven, vaguely researched study that we are supposed to take seriously. I say we take this information with a grain of salt. Am I completely wrong? You tell me.
And don’t mind us will we try and make a little bit of money out of this too. Why not buy a BMW backpack and revolt against Millward Brown along with us? Hey, maybe it will help get HighTechDeck somewhere on that list, possibly breakthrough into the top 1 million brand names. Hey, a man can dream can’t he?

August 4th 2009 | Posted by Drew

Here are some quirky gadgets which can colour up your collection or add a dash of quirkiness to your work table. Artists have used traditional gadgets and created new innovations when it comes to the designs, thus giving mundane things like USB flash drives a new look. Want to know more? Read on.

An Old School Game with a New Twist

An Old School Game with a New Twist

Drink Away the Night with the Battleship Drinking Game

The first one is the Enigma Battleship Drinking Game. For those of you who would spend time in classes playing battleships with your classmates, you will relate to this one. This is one of the most innovative modifications of the battleships game that has ever been released. This was designed by Mauricio Harion from Brazil. Instead of ships there are different shot glasses. You play the usual game of Battleship but every time you are hit, you have to down a shot. The game has a really slick look. You are bound to have a blast while playing it but ensure you don’t get hit too many times or you may end up sunk, as opposed to your battleship.

A Rare Game of Chess

This is for the budding Gary Kasparov’s all over the world. If you spend hours over the chessboard then isn’t it time you get yourself a brand new and different looking chessboard, instead of the usual ones which are so boring in black and white? Artist Paul Fryer has come up with the brand new concept of the Vacuum Tube Chess set. This is a limited edition version as only seven sets of the Vacuum Tube Chess set were made. Once you plug it in the pieces on the board all light up. All the pieces look the same. However there are symbols on the top of each tube piece to tell you what each piece is meant to symbolize.

Strap on Solar Vest for Energy in Every Situation

Though this sounds and definitely looks a little strange, the solar vest is definitely a useful thing. This has four inbuilt solar panels and a battery which has 8,800mAh of power. And the best thing about this strange vest is that the battery is rechargeable. There is also a sign on the back of the jacket which boldly proclaims “solar vest”.

Food for gizmo thought: Edge Lit LED TV, ViewSonic, Palm WebOS 1.1, Microsoft Sales, Toshiba 19LV612U

August 2nd 2009 | Posted by Drew

Samsung’s New LED Edge Lit TV

Samsung has recently launched the LED edge lit LED TV and people are going ballistic over this latest offering from the Samsung stable. There is the 46 inch UN46B7000 which has internet connectivity with DLNA and Yahoo Widgets as well.

viewsonicViewSonic Taking Charge

We all know that Viewsonic is a company best known for making good monitors, but recently it seems that the enterprise is now trying to widen its base and further capture the market with a wider range of computer related products. For starters they are working with nettops, netbooks, media PCs, and even media players. Thus as one can see, all these products are from the small form segment of computers. There is the Atom-based VOT 120 / 121 and 130 / 132 nettops ,Core 2 Duo-based VOT 530 / 550 media PC , with Blue-Ray as well as remote control, VNB 100 / 101 netbooks, new VPD 400 and 500 media players, with a 4.3-inch and 5-inch screen, and 8GB and 16GB of storage.

palm-webosPalm WebOS 1.1

The Palm webOS 1.1 has just been released so you can update your favorite little gadget. There are a few modifications in this latest version and it also allows media sync to work with the latest iTunes, which is the 8.2.1 version. Also, there are emoticons as well as Exchange support. Then there is an added bonus for all sports lovers as there is NFL Mobile Live. This is an application which you can use to watch games and hear audio all season long. Scrolling through long contact lists is a little better and more efficitent. Also, the time taken to load applications has seemed to significantly decrease.

microsoftMicrosoft’s Struggling Sales

Microsoft seems to be facing quite a lot of hiccups when it comes to sales. This is bad news for the software giant as, for the first time in its rather eventful and vivid history, there was a drop in sales in its first fiscal year which ended in 2009. There was a sizeable decline of about 3.2 percent in its sales and net profit fell to $14.57 billion in the third quarter. Also, in the fourth quarter sales fell even lower, by around 17 percent to 13.1 billion. Profits fell by a huge 29 percent, to $3.05 billion. Microsoft announced that causes for the decline were legal issues and also severance claims which were from laid off employees. Also there has been a decrease in sales in PCs and servers all over.

tv-kitchenToshiba 19LV612U Revolutionizes Watching TV………In the Kitchen

There have been many kitchen-friendly television sets in the past, but this one really sets a new mark in this segment of the TV industry. Toshiba has just launched the 19LV612U, and this has simply blown away all competition in the sector with one simple master stroke. This is called the Stainless Steel Style TV series. It has a built-in slot-loading DVD player, integrated ATSC / NTSC / QAM TV tuner, and a 1,366 x 768 native resolution. On top of all that it has a stainless steel coating which makes it a big draw, and effectively blends in the television with the rest of your kitchen. Other features include a 1,000:1 contrast ratio, five millisecond response time, HDMI / VGA inputs, a headphone jack, and VESA mount support. The World is Full of Gadgets.....Which Can You Actually Use?

News and Notes from the Technology World

The world of science and technology is one of constant change and dynamism. There are newer and newer gadgets and technology being built everyday which would never have occurred to man in his wildest dreams even a few decades back. Day by day, man is stretching the limits of his brain and coming up with advanced contraptions that are, in some way or the other, changing the world in some way or the other. So here is some latest news from that end, highlighting some of the newest quirks from the gizmo world.

AMD Celebrates Big Sales

Firstly, there is some celebratory news from AMD, a company which supplies computer processors. AMD has just shipped off its 500 millionth X86 processor. The company has recently celebrated its 40th year in existence and has also released news that 500 million CPUs have been sold by them. Intel was contacted about this piece of marvelous achievement and was asked as to how they felt about the success that their competition was enjoying. Surprisingly however they chose to remain vague about it.

HTC Click

The new Android powered HTC Click mobile is said to be putting up a real low price in the market, making it accessible to a larger cross section of people. It is being said that the Android powered HTC Click would usher in a range of Android powered mobile phones which would be part of the lower end segment.

Google Latitude on the iPhone

Lastly, the Google Latitude program has finally made it onto the iPhone. This way the iPhone comes up to its competitors like BlackBerry, Windows Mobile 5.0 and S60, with regards to this application. It is available to all iPhone users as a web application which pinpoints your current location through their web browser Safari. It has not been added to the Maps section of the iPhone, but separately as a selectable option. According to Google, or as far as their blog goes, Apple was worried that users might confuse it with the Maps application of the iPhone.

This Gaming Laptop Packs Some Serious Punch

This Gaming Laptop Packs Some Serious Punch

The Most Powerful Gaming Laptop Ever……..Until Tomorrow

Moving on to  the latest news in the world of gaming and which laptop has finally been declared the best gaming machine ever by gizmo and gaming geeks all over the world.  As I said earlier, this world is constantly evolving and changing itself over the years and there is always something new that comes up and destroys or rather renders the earlier developments obsolete. In a case from 2005, CompAmerica’s machine , the “Orca 9098” was called to be the most powerful gaming machine. It had a 3.8 GHz Pentium 4. However, over the years different machines have held this title, but all have been short-lived obviously. Now, the eX-L 18 has grabbed  the award with Intel Core 2 Duo Extreme processor, twin NVIDIA GeForce GTX 280M GPUs, up to 8GB of DDR3 memory, up to three 2.5-inch SATA or SSD drives, an optional Blu-ray drive and also an LCD 18.4-inch screen with a 1,920 x 1,080 resolution.

That about wraps things up on the technology front; these items are hot right now but as this are and have always been in the tech market, they will soon be old news.  Get out and grab a hold of an iPhone or rock out a session of a first person shooter on the eX-L 18 and enjoy the perks of living in the 21st century.

What is wrong with the iPhone? Some Simple Flaws that Need to be Discussed

July 28th 2009 | Posted by Drew
Does the iPhone Really Deserve all the Credit it Gets?

Does the iPhone Really Deserve all the Credit it Gets?

When the iPhone was about to be released, it seemed as if the entire world went into a frenzy, debating the pros and the cons of the phone which was supposed to be the be all and end all of cellular technology in these modern times. It was hyped as the peak of perfection, for the time being. But since then, many flaws of the phone have been brought to light and as a result, the aura of awe and perfection which usually surrounded the iPhone has waned quite a bit. It seems that this phone, with all its complex features lacks some of the basic features that are found in the most basic of cell phones everywhere.

For starters it doesn’t even have the cut-copy-paste feature, which is quite appalling considering the range and features of the phone. Even though it is a simple function it is necessary. It really should not have been left out and damages the effectiveness of the phone, especially when using it for business.

Secondly, another major flaw in the iPhone has recently been brought to light by some of the developers and hackers in the tech-world. The iPhone is being used by a lot of corporations all over the world, which means that security is always going to be a principle concern. The 3G phone is supposed to be using encryption friendly software which is meant to be secure and extremely difficult to crack.

However, it has been revealed by independent developers that the software is so weak that it can be cracked using some simple software. In fact there are some elements that can be broken down by amateur hackers, and that is not ok considering the widespread use of this gadget. On top of that it can often only take a few minutes to work your way around the security features. Thus you could lose crucial data and be a victim of hacking before you even realize what is going on. It is being criticized quite a bit for using such weak software. Especially considering that Apple has made claims about this phone being so high tech and high functioning that it is indeed meant to be the answer for everything.

Has Apple really created a phone that is substantially better than everything else on the market? Or has the success of the phone simply been a representation of incredible marketing tactics and a well run corporation?  While the Palm Pre has not necessarily competed with the iPhone in the toe to toe fashion that many people expected, Apple may be in for a bigger battle than they expect. The 3G iPhone is impressive and has mastered a number of applications, but it has a long way to go before it can truly be referred to as the best of the best, and the solution to all our mobile technology problems.

Never Stress Over a Rubik's Cube Again

Never Stress Over a Rubik's Cube Again

Having a computer is not enough. If you want to live the high tech, easy lifestyle you are after you must dress it up with adequate accessories and software to enhance its functionality and utility. It is like finding the right belt and pair of shoes to jazz up the smart new outfit that you are wearing. In a similar vein, a computer can be enhanced with certain features that make it even more useful and wide ranging in terms of its specs and certain applications. Here are some handy little inventions that can make life so much more easier for you, and your computer.

The Tornado

First comes the Tornado. This makes an incredibly monotonous task quite a lot more manageable. If you are looking to transfer all your files from an old computer to the new one that you have just bought, then be prepared for a long, boring and tedious day ahead of you. The Tornado gadget can however ease the pain a little bit. Plug the Tornado into the USB ports of both the computers. It displays the contents of both the terminals. Then do the drag-and-drop procedure of transferring folders and even directories from one machine to the other. It is speedier than most other options out there and also has cables that are four feet long. It is compatible with Windows XP and Windows Vista.

Elgato Turbo

If you are having a tough time trying to convert one video file into another of a different format, then the Elgato Turbo.264.HD is the best little gadget available on the market for you. This is a video convertor that comes in the form of a USB device. You can plug it into your computer and it will detect all the AVCHD camcorders that are there. Then you go the drag and drop way and get high quality or HD resolution videos. There is also some included software which you can use for editing the videos and giving them an added touch.

CubeCheater

Then comes the famous CubeCheater, which is an iPhone application. This is one of the truly crazy mobile phone applications that have been present in recent history. For all people that obsess over Rubik’s cubes, this application solves the Rubik’s cube on your iPhone using the camera. Photos are taken of each side of the Rubik’s Cube, then the software matches the color on each side and finally it solves the puzzle. And not only that. It will take you through a step by step routine as to how the entire mystery of the cube was solved. No wonder the iPhone is seen as the most versatile and time consuming gadget on the market.

Magic Pad

Speaking of the iPhone, with all of its power it still has a certain weak link, as all things perfect seem to have in mythology. The one major flaw that the phone seems to have is the fact that it lacks the features to do a simple copy paste! Thus, it is time for you to stop grumbling as there is light on the horizon. There is anapplication called the Magic Pad which comes at a price of $3.99. This is a brand new application that simply and easily allows the user to copy and paste text within notes. Simple, brief, but quite necessary for quite a few functions.

Avoid that Ruined Trip to the Amusement Park

Avoid that Ruined Trip to the Amusement Park

There are different threats that are posed to our lives and our safety at all times, and also in all places. Whether you are on a busy street, in a marketplace or even just chilling out at home, there are certain precautionary measures that you must take at all times. You must also ensure the security of your children, your family and also that of your home. One can never be too safe. Here are some quirky and yet immensely useful gadgets that will help you be safe and keep your loved ones well within your reach at all times.

Mommy I’m Here Child Locator

The first one is called the “Mommy I’m Here Child Locator”. As the name goes, it is perfectly obvious that this one is meant for worrying mothers who want to keep track of their frisky little toddlers. It has two units and one of these units is stuck onto the child, while the other is to be kept with you at all times. This is something like those GPS tracking dots that you see in spy and thriller movies. If ever, the toddler goes beyond a distance of 25 feet, then you will hear sounds on the unit that is with you. There is also another added advantage. That is, if you can’t find your child, then there is an 86 decibel alarm on your kid’s unit. Activate that and you will soon find him or her. The best part is, this locator can be used to work over distances of 150 feet and more as well.

USB Wireless Security Lock

There is the USB Wireless Security Lock. This is for all the paranoid androids who believe that the whole world is populated with evil data stealers. Thieves that are going to steal the data from their computers as soon as their backs are turned. Of course this fear can be well founded if you are dealing with highly sensitive or confidential data. This device ensures that you never forget to lock your computer at any point where your back is turned. The moment you plug in this security lock all your data gets sealed and protected from prying eyes. Once the user is at a distance of 2 meters away from the computer, the USB immediately goes into lock mode.

Wristwatch Walkie-Talkie

A lot of guys say that cell phones are electronic handcuffs, well this may be taking it to a whole new level. If you want to be in touch with your partner at all times then the Wristwatch Walkie Talkie Two-Way Radio Digital Watch is just the thing for you. It is ideal if you are going on a hike or trip with someone, and thus need to be in constant communication at all times. It has a range of 6 km and has about 12 hours of display time. The devices come with very good coverage and are light which makes them very easy on the wrists. They are also multi-channeled.

SeaKey Satellite Monitoring System

Are you a water lover that loves spending time in the open seas sailing on a boat? If you are one of the seafaring types then perhaps it is time to take a look at the SeaKey satellite monitoring system for safer boating. This is a satellite and subscription based monitor which ensures your safety while you are battling the waves. It transmits SOS messages and also alarm signals for situations such as “high water” for example. There is also a burglar alarm system should you choose to leave your boat unwatched for extended periods of time.
