May 24th 2009 | Posted by Drew

A Video Library of Your Very Own

A Video Library of Your Very Own

Now this is just plain cool. Sure Blu-Ray Movies and Blu-Ray movies have seemingly taken over thanks to their quality, but it didn’t take long for an even newer technology to come out. We all know that the internet has a never ending list of movies that you can watch on a daily basis, and more are added everyday. Services like Netflix allow you instant access to your very own video library in just a matter of minutes, and now with the all new Samsung bd-p4600 you can truly become the king, or queen, of movies.

Your Very Own Video Library

This “connected” blue-ray player allows you to reach into the internet and instantly access any movie title on the internet. With this player you not only have the ability to watch your favorite 2.0 blu-ray discs over and over again, but can also take advantage of Netflix’ never ending supply of new movies and the classics. It won’t be long before you do not even need blu-ray discs anymore, and you can totally forget those days of running out to Blockbuster in a torrential downpour to try and return your rental on time.

And That’s Not All

After you are done watching whichever movie suits your fancy in the moment you can also connect to Pandora, the super on screen internet radio service. This makes the Samsung bd-p4600 perfect for parties or just kicking around in your house. And the best part is that it is so sleek and lightweight that you can easily move it around or bring it anywhere where there is a Wi-Fi hotspot. It is basically your very own portable home theater which holds a never ending supply of content.

The Price Tag

As of writing this, you can get your hands on your own Samsung bd-p4600 for around $500 USD. It is time to make your own contribution to the never ending battle between BD movies and online content. Every day the quality of internet movies gets better and the price of BD movies go down. You simply have to love market competition, don’t you?

The Rogers Revolution; The Google Android is Finally Being Released in Canada.

May 22nd 2009 | Posted by Drew

Affordable and Ground Breaking

Affordable and Ground Breaking

It seems like it was forever ago when the Google Android phone was first released in the United States, but it has just been announced that Rogers will finally be bringing the “revolution” to Canada. The best news for Canadian mobile users is that the Android Revolution will not be anymore expensive than the iPhone currently is.

The affordable price isn’t necessarily big news as Rogers has done the same with a number of smart phones over the past few years, including the iPhone 3G and the BlackBerry 8900. Usually when Rogers Wireless puts out a new smart phone it hovers right around the $200 range, and that is exactly where the Google Android will come in at with a three year contract.

Google Android Pricing

Rogers will be putting out two different Android handsets for mobile users to choose from, including the HTC Dream, more commonly referred to as the G1 and the HTC Magic. Each of them will be made available for $199.99 after signing up for a three year service agreement. There is no set word on the exact contracts that will be made available but Rogers will more than likely offer a set voice and data plan just like the BlackBerry contract and iPhone contract offer.

The Mystery of the Android

Rogers has brought on a rather unique marketing plan with this new launch as they have really just plastered banners and posters all around declaring a revolution is coming on June 2nd. The truth it is has created a lot of mystery around what exactly is coming, considering the fact that a lot of Canadians are still unaware of what exactly the Google Android phone is.

Upcoming Review of the Android

Thankfully for you, you will be able to find out right here on HighTechDeck.com. As soon as the new phones are launched on June 2nd in Canada, we will get our hands on one, analyze the contract offers and give you a full fledged review. So stick around and get ready for all the Google Android news in the next few weeks.

RIM BlackBerry Storm review; Innovative, Creative, Gorgeous but With Some Unusual Flaws

May 20th 2009 | Posted by Drew

Small Flaws but Incredible in the Long Run

Small Flaws but Incredible in the Long Run

Let us clear up a few things first here. Has the blackberry storm been on the market and available for quite some time now? Absolutely. Are we the first to report on it? Not by any means. Yet, the fact of the matter remains that it has NOT gotten the complete and utter attention that it deserves. The truth is, without any fluff, that the Blackberry storm is the sexiest, sleekest and best functioning smart phone that has hit the market in a long time.

From the moment that you pick up the Storm you can feel just how durable it is, and the screen on the front is fantastic with an excellent 480 by 360 high resolution screen. Aside from its actual mobile usages, the color, depth and brightness make it perfect for watching YouTube clips. However truth be told, it would be nice to have widescreen for watching internet clips or movie trailers.

The Storm implements Research in Motion’s very first Sure-Touch interface which makes it stunningly easy to navigate the screen and use the phone just like you would with a proper keyboard. You simply can’t mess up and touch the wrong button or function thanks to the Sure-Touch function.

A trackball would make the screen a little bit easier to navigate and thus it is not as smooth as the iPhone, but it is unique and altogether the UI runs very well. While the touch screen is fully functional and probably the best out there, it is not as promising as a full QWERTY keyboard if you are planning on writing long articles or sending lengthy emails. The QWERTY concept in landscape mode is perfect if you have dainty little hands, but the larger your fingers are the harder the whole process becomes.

The Blackberry Storm is fantastic without a doubt, but the only glaring problem is the lack of Wi-Fi on the phone. This is really a big mistake made by RIM, as any device used for browsing should command Wi-Fi capability. While the Storm can function quite well thanks to HSDPA and 3G, the real underlying problem here is cost. If you plan on sending a ton of emails with large attachments or downloading lots of music, the cost of Storm phone plans can easily pile up. With the iPhone you can implement the O2 heavy user policy which can cut costs quite efficiently.

For now you can install Google Maps, YouTube, Facebook and the BlackBerry Application Centre but the RIM’s application store is just starting up. It was just put online in March of 2009 and is not fully up and running by any means. The good news is that the Google Maps application is simply fantastic and even effortless.

The BlackBerry Storm’s built in camera is pretty stunning and works wonders with the beautifully large and high resolution screen. One thing is that you are going to have to invest in a MicroSD card if you plan on taking a ton of pictures as Vodaphone only plans on giving you a 1GB internal memory with purchase.

The last true drawback to the BlackBerry Storm is that the battery life is not as good as it could be. If you use your phone often you are going to have to charge it every night, but this is pretty comparable to most other phones that are alike in the market.

Are there a few drawbacks that need improvement? Without a doubt. The bottom line is that Research in Motion has really put out an incredibly innovative phone with the BlackBerry Storm. It looks beautiful, feels even better and is perfect for small business and emailing. While we have to be honest, the Vodaphone contracts are not altogether to appealing, but that aside, this phone is incredibly stunning and can suit your needs quite perfectly given the chance.

RIM has really put a lot of time, thought and effort into the design of the BlackBerry storm and it is definitely worth the investment. That is for now anyways, until they come up with something even more ground breaking, which is inevitable.

Review of the Samsung LE40B650 Internet LCD TV; Samsung is Bringing Some Modern Spice to your Home Television Entertainment

May 19th 2009 | Posted by Drew

Vast Selection Can Make it Tough

Vast Selection Can Make it Tough

The new Samsung LE40B0B650 has found a way to package the internet and your television into one efficient gadget. A lot of companies have been trying to do this recently but have really, to be quite honest, been utterly unsuccessful. Samsung however has actually pulled it off as they are the first ones to incorporate an internet widget platform that was created and designed by Yahoo and Intel.

These new PC widgets, or “Internet TV” as Samsung refers to it, are basically flash memory items that are stashed into the LCD TV. They can be accessed quite easily by using the memory dock available at the bottom of the screen. As of right now, you can easily access Flickr, YouTube, and news and weather information. Samsung has announced that you will be able to access a wider number of widgets and applications in the near future however.

Unlike other brands that have blended a television in with a PC, the whole process with the Samsung LE40B0B650 is really quite simple. All you have to do is plug in an Ethernet cable and get on your way. Even if you do not have a wired internet network, you can purchase a wireless hub with all the appropriate drivers along with the TV for a reasonable extra fee.

The set itself has very respectable network credentials which allow for streaming video and audio files from different computers on your network and the ability to quickly access any digital content. There are also a bunch of extra add-ons such as recipes, kid’s stories and image collections that you can access.

If you want to just take a good, straight look at the TV, it is rather impressive as well. The black flat screen is shiny and really provides some very good quality images. The full HD panel provides a wide range of details and colors and adds that little extra zip to your pictures, video and content.

Of course when you buy a TV such as the Samsung LE40B0B650 you are expecting HD material to look good. However the great part about this set is that standard definition also comes in looking bright and clear. The internal PC has the ability to read images and video and perform a unique up-scaling process to make it all look better.

There are also a ton of connections that come along with this LCD TV which make it extra useful. You can connect to composite AV, HDMI, a PC Connection, USB’s. Analog audio input/output, Ethernet jack and digital audio input/output.

One drawback for the Samsung LE40B0B650 is the fact that it uses standard CCFL backlighting which brings blacks on screen that look a little bit shallow. You really are only going to notice this though if you are extremely critical and in the know when it comes to screen resolution.

As usual with Samsung products the audio you get from this LCD TV stands above the crowd. The invisible speakers provide some good quality sound along with multiple music modes and a very nicely integrated five band equalizer.

When compared with other LCD TV’s, the Samsung LE40B650 is not really that slim and it isn’t revolutionary when it comes to picture by any means, but it is a great step in the right direction for LCD TV’s and widget TV. While this new idea just seems to be breaking the ice, it could very well be an example of the future of home television systems. Give it a trial and you will surely be more than impressed.

The Sony X-Series Walkman; Finally a Little Competition in the MP3 Player Market

May 19th 2009 | Posted by Drew

Bye Bye Old Fashioned Walkmans

Bye Bye Old Fashioned Walkmans

The new Sony X-Series Walkman has been called a savior by many tech experts and may be single handedly responsible for saving the Walkman. Although Sony dominated the portable music market for decades, when the Apple iPod appeared, it seemed as though Sony just gracefully bowed out. The company was disinterested in putting out products that supported MP3 files and just stuck to their guns when it came to ugly, oversized walkmans that nobody wanted anymore. Apple ended up laughing all the way to the bank, or at least they WERE laughing.

Finally Sony has taken a step back into the market and is starting to give Apple and the iPod a bit of a run for the portable music crown. The X-Series not only looks better and is more sleekly designed, but it also has enhanced sound quality. The walkman is equipped with excellent sounding audio as well as an advanced digital sound processor and noise canceling. This essentially means that no matter what type of music you choose to rock out to or which volume settings you use, it will be crystal clear and background noise around you will be tuned out.

The best part about the X-Series walkman when compared to old Sony Walkmans is that it will play pretty much anything from MP3’s to AAC’s and WMA’s. You can even purchase music from the iTunes store and crank it out onto this Walkman.

When compared directly to the infamous iPod, we have to admit that Apple’s software is bar none. However, the X-Series offers a very easy to navigate drag and drop application, which lets you toss your favorite tunes onto your player quickly and effortlessly. The screen itself is about a half an inch smaller than the iPod Touch.

Even though it is a bit smaller it actually makes up for the size difference when it comes to vibrancy and the quality of the picture. The new OLED screen for the X-Series quite literally puts the iPod’s LED one to shame. This makes flipping through pictures and watching video quite a bit more enjoyable.

With respect to the X-Series Walkman’s touch screen it is a little bit on the basic side. This can be great if you are into simpler technology but it does not offer as many tools and applications.

It terms of sex appeal, the X-Series is a little bit clunky and less attractive when put side by side with the iTouch, but for a lot of people that is not really that important. It is smaller which allows you to toss it into your pocket easier and the granite sides make it quite durable as well. There are also some easy to use side buttons, which help you navigate through songs and run through some applications, without having to fish the player out of your pocket every time.

All in all, the Sony X-Series Walkman is quite a major step in the right direction and could prove to be some healthy competition for Apple, FINALLY. The interface is not as crisp as the iPod Touch and it does not have Mac compatibility, but other than that it really does stand out. The screen quality and audio sound are top notch and this is finally a Walkman that deserves to be put up on a pedestal right near the iPod. Maybe not right beside it, but near. Either way, it is definitely a very positive step in the right direction for Sony, and an exciting product that can finally put some competition back into the portable music market.

Mobile Phones

The Palm Pre might be the Best Smart Phone on the Market

May 14th 2009 | Posted by Drew

Small and Light with a Powerful Punch

Small and Light with a Powerful Punch

The iPhone has dominated the mobile phone market since it first burst onto the smart phone scene. There have been other competitors but no company or phone has come close to being able to offer what Apple does with the iPhone. That is, until now.

The Palm Pre was voted the most highly anticipated new gadget of all of 2009 and may be the biggest, best and most exciting handset announced in years. Whether you are looking for a new phone, already own a smart phone or are just looking for some more information on smart phones, keep reading for a full review of the all new Palm Pre and what we love about it.

One of the most striking features off the bat is how small the Palm Pre is. It is not clunky and actually extremely light considering all of the features it holds and the applications it can run. With that said, it is not nearly as thin as the iPhone, but that is mostly due to the fact that it is a slider. If you want a better idea of its size, it is relatively the same as an iPod classic.

Right from the get go you can see that a lot of thought and detail was put into the design of Palm Pre’s Web OS UI and UX in order to keep it efficient and easy to use. The Palm Pre’s WEB OS UI and UX are dazzling. While the gadget is still relatively new there have been no reports of choppy video or any lags at all. There are a ton of applications that you can use without hassle and while they keyboard system is not spectacular, it gets the job done.

Palm decided to stick with the vertical slider QWERTY keyboard as they didn’t see the horizontal type being much more effective. Also the Palm Pre is one of the only smart phones that is using the vertical slider, so it makes it stand out from everything else.

One of the coolest little add-ons is the gesture bar. It allows users to use the phone with one hand, when on the go. That has been the one problem with the iPhone. If you are on the move it can be quite difficult to navigate the touch screen with just one hand. The gesture bar allows you to effortlessly move from application to application even while running for the train or hailing a taxi.

In terms of any negatives the design is useful and original but it could have had a little more. In a few ways it looks a little too “cute” and a larger screen could have made the applications a whole lot better. With that being said, that is the only real drawback and could just be a matter of personal preference.

The way the internet is used on the phone is also quite impressive as you can pretty much do anything from checking your email, viewing sports highlights, making presentations or even uploading videos to youtube.

Possibly the most exciting part about the launch of the Pre Palm is the fact that Palm is working to make it a universal smart phone. While we are all aware that the iPhone only “technically” works with AT&T, there is hope that you will be able to use the Pre Palm with any mobile service provider in the near future. This will help steer away from all the jail-breaking and unlocking that has surfaced with regards to the iPhone. A universal smart phone makes a lot more sense for consumers and it should be your choice to use the phone you purchased in any way that you like.

Digital Cameras

Affordable, High Quality, High Value and Dependable Digital Camera; The Canon Powershot A590 IS

May 13th 2009 | Posted by Drew

Value and Quality in One Small Package

Value and Quality in One Small Package

When it comes to gadgets and technology that everyone wants to get their hands on digital cameras are at the forefront of the tech market. From high end cameras for professional photographers to affordable digital cameras for beginners, you can find pretty much anything you need to fit your budget.

The fact is that the digital camera market is oversaturated. Just try walking into a camera store and you will be swamped with options, specs and confusing information and an abundance of products. So we are going to help you with a complete, yet brief and easy to understand, review of one of the most popular and consumer friendly digital cameras available today, the Canon Powershot A590 IS.

If you are a professional photographer that loves to invest in a variety of lenses and cameras, then you can probably turn away from this review. However if you are looking for a digital camera for everyday life that will give you quality, reliability and fool proof technology, then this is the camera for you.

The Canon Powershot A590 IS has a plethora of features and comes hand in hand with excellent image quality especially if you are shooting pictures in a well lit atmosphere. The controls are easy to navigate and often easily automated. With this digital camera you are guaranteed to get excellent value out of your investment.

This is not to say that the camera itself is perfect, as there are a few cons. Although that is to be expected unless you are willing to fork over thousands of dollars on revolutionary equipment. The Canon Powershot A590 IS recycles its flash rather slowly and often times the movies can playback with a choppy effect. Aside from that, when you are taking pictures indoors, the image noise at a higher ISO setting can be quite excessive.

There are reviews plastered all over the internet when it comes to this camera and most are positive and spot on. From Amazon.com to Cnet.com the reviews for this digital camera are endless yet almost all of them are positive.

All in all it is almost impossible to match the picture quality, features, value and performance that the Canon Powershot A590 IS offers. As previously mentioned it is not the first choice of serious, professional photographers but is exceptionally easy to use and reliable. The 4x zoom camera offers automatic features such as face detection, red eye correction and optical image stabilization. If you are a true amateur then the camera even comes with a completely automated “easy mode” which does all the work for you.

A brand new Canon Powershot A590 IS comes at an estimated price just under $200. If that is a little much for your budget then you can elect to go with the Canon Powershot A580. All in all it has a number of the same features with just a little less quality and costs about $50 dollars less.

In the end this digital camera is easily one of the most popular options on the market and for good reason. When it comes to value, usability and convenience the Canon Powershot A590 IS has it all. If you are looking for that quick and trusted purchase before a big trip or a big event, then we suggest you head out and grab this digital camera while you can. You simply will not regret it and the memories it provides will last a lifetime.

Amazon Kindle Review; Convenient and Reliable but Don’t Run Out to the Store Just Yet

May 12th 2009 | Posted by Drew

Lighter and More Convenient than Paperbacks

Lighter and More Convenient than Paperbacks

While it is definitely not one of the prettiest new gadgets on the market, the Amazon Kindle is becoming quite a popular gizmo for men and women of all ages. The lack of appeal in its appearance is undeniable as it looks like some oversized gadget straight out the 80’s. With that said, appearance isn’t everything and the Kindle does not disappoint when it comes right down to it.

By no means are we going to give the Kindle a perfect review. There are glitches that need to be fixed and improvements that need to be made. However these will come in time and for now, this all new e-book reader is by far the best of its kind on the market. While the Apple iPod has been credited with changing the way we all listen to music, the Amazon Kindle has set the basis for changing the way we all read books.

While the price tag is definitely hefty at $399, a lot of people will fall in love with this product for its wireless capabilities and pure convenience. Wherever you are, whatever you are doing you will be able to download and read a book of any kind. Compare this with Sony’s less popular Digital Book and you notice the advantages right away. While the Digital Book does do the job and comes at a less steep price, $299, you have to hook it right into a computer if you ever want to get your hands on a new book.

On top of this the Kindle can hold up to 200 hundred books and comes with a few other entertaining add-ons such as a free email account on which you can send and receive emails wherever you are.  Are the add-ons ground breaking? Absolutely not, but they add a nice little something extra that you cannot find in a simple paperback book.

To be quite honest the Kindle is going to change the way we read and access digital content. It runs well and is extremely convenient. Sure the design and appearance leaves a little something to be desired, but is that really important? As long as it is light, functions well and allows you to read books then it is doing its job.

The main problem here is the price. Considering the fact that there are some glitches and some features that could be added, $399 is a little much to be asking. If you simply cannot wait to get your hands on this item, then you will not be disappointed. However if you are willing to stick it out with audio books on your iPod or good old fashioned paperbacks, then you may want to hold out for a few months and wait for a price drop.

If the Amazon Kindle was available at under $200 or even $250 then we would definitely suggest running out and getting one right now. For now, at least until they clean it up a bit, it is suggested that you give it some time before running out and grabbing your own.

Technology of Tomorrow

In years past the current decade we live in was expected to be one filled with abundant, life changing technologies. From flying cars to instant meals that were immortalized in cartoons like the Jetsons, the year 2000 was supposed to be more than it has become. With that being said there are still a number of promising gadgets and gizmos that are looking to lead the way to a brighter tomorrow. Here are some of the most promising tech toys and ideas that will change the way we go about our everyday lives in the future.

Haptic Technology

We all have fallen in love with touch screens and the benefits they can offer when it comes to cell phones and other devices. However the truth is that they often leave a lot to be desired. They either do not always recognize your touch or are restricted in the features they offer. This may no longer be the case with the creation of Haptic Technology. This technology creates a sense of touch without any actual physical connection. The first example was Playstation’s Dual Shock controllers, but so much more can be done. There are now gloves being created where a person can feel and touch objects that only exist in a world of virtual reality. What could be next? Being able to reach out and grab a drink from the fridge without having to get off the couch? Maybe.

Universal Devices

The smart phones that are available on the market are amazing. iPhones and all their competitors offer and take advantage of a staggering amount of technology. However the truth is that these devices are just the beginning. Universal devices are an idea that is not unattainable anymore. Within time your smart phone may offer you the ability to project HDTV onto a wall and have real-time video conversations at any time you want. Your phone could even be capable of turning your heat up and down in your house or even paying your monthly bills with a touch of button. There are not many tech problems that stand in the way of all this being a possibility. Your entire life may be consumed within one tiny device. And you thought just losing your car keys was bad.

Cloud Computing

With the creation of Facebook and other popular sites that use new internet technology it seems that everyone is obsessing over “Web 2.0.” In reality we will look back on these applications as just being the beginning of something much more incredible and widespread. Just think about how video games have progressed over the years. It was not long ago when many of us thought that the Sega Genesis system had perfected graphics. We never imagined how much better it could get, and look where games and technology have come since then. Cloud computing has the ability to, one day, allow us to do everything and anything online. Early Networks have been created that are mind boggling in their capacity and it may not be long until we can perform tasks and run computers without any storage at all.
